When consulting for a breast augmentation, there are two concerns that Dr. Jonov frequently hears. They include, “Can you breastfeed after breast augmentation?” and “Do you lose feeling in your nipples after breast augmentation?” These are understandable concerns that absolutely should be considered when evaluating whether or not to undergo breast augmentation. Let’s take a closer look at the second question.
The loss of nipple sensation is a risk during breast augmentation. However, the amount of risk depends largely on the surgical technique. The traditional inframammary fold incision carries little risk to the nipples. Transaxillary and transumbilical incisions are extremely unlikely to impact sensation in the nipples. The periareolar incision carries the most risk to the nipples, though it is still a fairly low chance that all sensation is lost.
Immediately following surgery, it is normal to experience some numbness in the breasts near and around the incision sites. This could include the nipples and areolas. Though, throughout the healing process, the sensation should return. It is extremely unlikely that all nipple sensitivity is lost due to breast augmentation. The majority of patients notice no significant, long term changes in nipple sensation after breast augmentation surgery.
