What Is The Difference Between An FDL And A Tummy Tuck?

By February 14, 2023 No Comments

Tummy tucks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A standard tummy tuck is the most well known version. Though, there is another tummy tuck sometimes called an FDL. FDL stands for “fleur-de-lis”. So, what is the difference between an FDL and a tummy tuck?

The biggest difference between an FDL and a tummy tuck is their incisions. Both include the traditional horizontal hip-to-hip incision. However, a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck also includes a vertical incision up the abdomen to remove more skin. It can sometimes even involve a second horizontal incision under the breasts or chest.

An FDL tummy tuck is most commonly performed following massive weight loss where a patient has a large amount of skin left over across the abdomen. Basically, it cannot be adequately addressed with a standard tummy tuck alone. It is a less common technique, but it can be life changing for patients who are good candidates.
