Causes Of Sagging Arms & Arm Lift Surgery

There are three main factors that contribute to the development of saggy, or “batwing”, arms: genetics, aging, and weight fluctuation. Oftentimes, these factors work together to cause sagging arms over time.

First off, genetics can play a role in where your fat collects and distributes. This is especially true as you age. Some women have a genetic predisposition to fat collection in the arms. Combine this with the normal effects of aging like decrease in skin elasticity, and this can lead to arms that look saggy.

Secondly, as mentioned the natural effects of aging can worsen the look of the arms. The skin loses elasticity, skin accumulates sun damage, and the body naturally holds more fat with age. This often worsens genetic factors and fluctuations in weight that cause sagging arms.

Finally, weight fluctuations–loss or gain–can contribute to flabby arms. For example, weight gain can cause fat to collect in the arms. On the other hand, weight loss reduces the fat, however, this can leave extra skin behind which causes the “batwing” effect.

In most cases, patients have a combination of these factors. Dr. Jonov can discuss these during a consultation at Seattle Plastic Surgery. An arm lift or arm liposuction can address most concerns with arm appearance. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Jonov, call us at 206-324-1120 or contact us online.
