3 GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW POST TUMMY TUCK SURGERY

By August 16, 2013 No Comments

When considering a tummy tuck, the recovery period is always one of the main focuses for prospective patients.

The tummy tuck is the third most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the United States. When you are left with extra skin or tissue after a major weight loss or pregnancy, surgery is often the only way to remove it. The tummy tuck is specifically designed to address these common issues.

A tummy tuck procedure, or abdominoplasty, is often performed on an out-patient basis. However, on rare occasions, some patients may need to spend a night or two in the hospital. The intensity and scope of the procedure can certainly impact the recovery period and the length of the healing process from patient to patient.

RECOVERING FROM YOUR TUMMY TUCK

After a tummy tuck, many patients spend a few hours in the hospital and then return home under the care of a friend or loved one. Here are three guidelines on what to expect with your tummy tuck recovery process.

1. It is normal for there to be some swelling around the area, which may be addressed with special post-surgical garments, ice packs and prescriptions.

2. There may also be some minor pain, which can be managed with medication. Some patients experience pain during coughing or deep breathing, which is normal and does not signify a problem.

3. It is important to take it easy for the first few days following your tummy tuck, and avoid activity for the first five to six days. Many patients are able to return to work or normal activity (without any heavy lifting) after 10-14 days. Vigorous exercise is often achievable in a month or so. The true results of the tummy tuck procedure are generally not visible for two to three months. Incision lines will continue to fade and flatten out for around 12 months.

If you think that now would be a great time for a tummy tuck, talk to your board-certified surgeon and see how you can begin flattening your belly. For those of you in the Seattle area, we would love to talk with you here at Seattle Plastic Surgery Center and begin the journey to your new body.
